The ICAM Modernizes with comprehensive statutory reform

The Madrid Bar Association (ICAM) has approved a major overhaul of its statutes, with 79% of members voting in favor during an extraordinary general meeting on December 17. This marks the first update since 2007 and introduces significant changes to governance, sustainability, technology, and professional protection to meet 21st-century challenges.

Key innovations include the introduction of electronic voting in elections, the establishment of the ICAM University Center to offer degrees and postgraduate courses, and the integration of sustainability as a guiding principle. The reform also enhances the protection of professional confidentiality and updates the rules for fees and member contributions, capping fee increases to the annual inflation rate.

Eugenio Ribón, ICAM’s Dean, hailed the reform as a milestone, stating, “These new statutes reflect our commitment to building a modern, forward-looking institution that meets the evolving needs of our profession and society.”

The new statutes align with recent legislative developments, including the General Statute of Spanish Lawyers and the Organic Law on the Right to Defense. ICAM’s transformation underscores its dedication to staying ahead in a rapidly evolving legal landscape, ensuring that its members are well-equipped to navigate the demands of the profession.
