Squire Patton Boggs hires Lorena Fatás as partner

Squire Patton Boggs has named Lorena Fatás as a partner in its Litigation practice in Madrid. She joins from the Special Department of Economy, Energy and Environment of the Spanish State Legal Service (Abogacía del Estado), where she built a career focused on complex litigation, arbitration, and regulatory issues spanning economic policy, energy transition, and environmental regulation.

Stephen Sampson, head of Litigation for EMEA, noted that Fatás brings significant talent and experience across numerous complex cases, and that she joins a consolidated team in Madrid led by Javier Izquierdo, well-positioned to advise clients on both domestic and international matters, with the firm’s connections in Latin America as an additional asset.

Teresa Zueco, managing partner of the Madrid office, highlighted that the firm has focused on building Madrid as a full-service office with the specialisation clients require and depth across key practice areas, with litigation having been a strategic priority. Under Izquierdo’s leadership, the firm has built a team in Spain it regards with particular confidence.

Fatás herself expressed enthusiasm for joining the firm, noting that it operates at the highest level in dispute resolution with a strong client base worldwide, and that the firm’s presence in Spain represents a success story she looks forward to contributing to alongside the Madrid team.

The profile

Prior to her role at the Abogacía del Estado, Fatás spent more than five years in the International Arbitration Department of the Spanish Government, where she was appointed Deputy Head in 2021. During that period, she advised and represented the Kingdom of Spain in investor-state disputes, particularly under the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) and bilateral investment treaties (BITs). Her practice covers investment and commercial disputes, sovereign state representation, and advisory work across banking, energy, infrastructure, and public enterprises.

She also has extensive experience in the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards across multiple jurisdictions. Her work has been acknowledged by UNCITRAL, having participated in one of its working groups on the reform of the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) system. She also has experience with key arbitral institutions including ICSID and the SCC.
