Proença de Carvalho resumes legacy with new law firm

Proença de Carvalho, the new law firm founded by Francisco Proença de Carvalho after his departure from Uría Menéndez in August, opened its doors in Lisbon at the start of 2025. On its newly launched website, the firm introduces its team, consisting of seven partners and seven associates who transits from other firms.

The partners board includes André Matias de Almeida, specializing in commercial, corporate, and M&A, who joins from Albuquerque & Almeida; Bárbara Schürmann, a specialist in tax, joining from Gama Glória; Eduarda Proença de Carvalho, who focuses on family law, inheritances, succession planning, and dispute resolution, joining from Uría Menéndez; Filipa Loureiro, a specialist in labor, commercial law, and dispute resolution, also joining from Uría; Francisco Sousa Coutinho, who deals with real estate law and urbanism, having left PwC Legal; and Frederico Pestana, a specialist in labor law, commercial law, and dispute resolution, joining from FL Advogados; in addition to the founder, Francisco Proença de Carvalho, who will handle litigation, economic criminal law, internal investigations, and M&A.

The initial team also includes seven associates: Bruno Matias, Gonçalo Poejo Grilo, Igor Amarii, Mariana Castro Pereira, Manuel Bruschy Martins, Miguel Almeida Simões, and Tânia de Matos.

“At Proença de Carvalho, we want to be ‘your trusted legal partners’. We are a forward-looking law firm built on top of an historical legacy. Our multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals combines the strength of innovation with the trustworthiness of tradition, offering specialized legal solutions for each business and each situation”, the new law firm states on its social media channels.

Proença de Carvalho’s trajectory

The Proença de Carvalho brand, therefore, resumes its trajectory that began in the 1960s, bearing the name of its founder, Francesco’s father, Daniel Proença de Carvalho. He began his career in solo practice and later founded Proença de Carvalho & Associados, which, in 2010, merged with the Iberian firm Uría Menéndez, becoming “Uría Menéndez – Proença de Carvalho” in Portugal. This association ended in August 2024, following Francisco Proença de Carvalho’s decision to leave the firm, where he had been a partner since 2013.

“We thought a lot about this project and how we wanted to bring it to life. For the whole team, it made sense to preserve the legacy of my family name. We can say that Proença de Carvalho is a brand of rejuvenated tradition”, explains Francisco Proença de Carvalho about his new venture, which now operates in an office in Amoreiras, Lisbon.
