This bond issuance, amounting to 40.8 million euros, is intended to finance the Mangualde biomass power plant, currently operated by Capwatt, which produces renewable energy from residual forest biomass, to promote the production process of sustainable wood-based panels developed by Sonae Arauco.

This operation was performed through Sociedade de Iniciativa e Aproveitamentos Florestais – Energia, S.A. owned by Capwatt, a subsidiary of the company controlled by Efanor, the holding company of the Azevedo family.

Sonae Capital was founded in 2007, surfacing as a spin-off of Sonae. It is currently comprised of a portfolio of various types of core businesses – Hospitality, Tróia Resort, Fitness and Energy; and one non core business – Real Estate assets.

Sonae Capitals’ strategic purpose is to identify new business opportunities in segments with high growth potential, and provide them with resources to enable growth until they become self-sustainable with mechanisms for efficient capital allocation.
Most recently, it acquired Adira, a Portuguese based industrial company.

Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados (Morais Leitão), through a team lead by the consultant Cláudia Castanheira dos Santos, has advised Banco BPI and Banco Empresas Montepio on the subscription of Sonae Capital’s first issuance of Project Green Bonds, structured as project finance.
