Linklaters helps UAH develop COVID-19 app

Linklaters Spain has provided pro bono advice to the Universidad de Alcalá COVID-19 chair on the development of an application to help with COVID-19 diagnosis

Linklaters Spain has collaborated with the Universidad de Alcalá COVID-19 chair and its promoters Private Equity and Venture Capital firm ProA Capital and Starlite Foundation in the launch of a free web application. This app allows physicians, by anonymously entering certain clinical data and basic analytical parameters of COVID-19 patients with to obtain reference information to optimise therapeutic strategies and care management of these patients.

The chair, led by department of Medicine and Medical Specialties professor Melchor Álvarez de Mon Soto, has developed a free application for medical professionals that seeks to help them in the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients by estimating the risk of presenting a negative evolution by Coronavirus such as admission to ICU or death.

It is based on the study of 2,000 patients infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from HM Hospitals and another 1,500 from the Hospital Universitario Príncipe de Asturias de Alcalá de Henares showing an 82% accuracy rate and has been published in the prestigious Journal of Personalised Medicine (MDPI).

The company Ibermática has been in charge of the development of this application that acts as a ‘medical calculator’ based on the variables that determine a negative evolution of the patient such as the level of oxygen saturation in the blood, age, the ratio of lymphocytes over leukocytes, the level of C-reactive protein, comorbidities or previous pathologies of the patient, the number of leukocytes, the sex of the patient, as women have a lower risk of negative evolution and the level of D-Dimer.

Linklaters advised pro bono on the development of the terms of use of the application, and assisted Ibermática and the chair with the development of the application and user interface, in close coordination with the Universidad de Alcalá legal team.
