Morais Leitão partner appointed as new UAE´s president
Morais Leitão non-equity partner Pedro Gouveia e Melo has been elected president of the UAE – European Lawyers’ Union
Pedro Gouveia e Melo (pictured), Morais Leitão EU and Competition non-equity partner, was elected president of the Union des Avocats Européens (UAE – European Lawyers’ Union). General Assembly of 13 November 2020, which was held by videoconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic, elected him for the 2020-2022 term.
The UAE, established in 1986 in Luxembourg, is a non-profit association bringing together the practising lawyers in all the Member States of the European Union. Its primary aim is promoting the professional practice of Law in Europe, as well as furthering the practice of European Union Law and the European Convention on Human Rights. The UAE and its regional delegations and commissions organise numerous conferences and other events across Europe and promote the publication of the most relevant contributions. The UAE organises the UAE Scholarship for Young Lawyers annually.
Pedro Gouveia e Melo has more than fifteen years’ experience in representing and advising international and domestic companies and public authorities on all fields of Competition Law (merger control, State aids, antitrust investigations and counselling), in a wide range of industries, such as energy, financial services and food & beverages. He also advises clients on EU law, in particular the Internal Market rules, the Common Agricultural Policy and Structural Funds. His experience includes cases before both the Portuguese Competition Authority and the European Commission, and he has been involved in litigation before the European Court of Justice, the EU General Court and the Portuguese courts. He has also worked in cases before the U.S. Antitrust Agencies and the European Court of Human Rights.
