Renowned lawyer Fernando de la Mata passes away

It is with great sadness that Pérez-Llorca announces the passing of Fernando de la Mata, a beloved partner in the firm’s Litigation and Arbitration practice. Fernando, who was 57 years old, joined Pérez-Llorca’s Barcelona office in 2022, bringing with him a wealth of expertise and a reputation for professionalism, integrity, and warmth.

Fernando’s distinguished career spanned decades, marked by significant contributions to civil and commercial litigation, including disputes in corporate, banking, and fundamental rights matters, as well as conflicts arising from M&A transactions, joint ventures, and civil liability. He was also highly respected in arbitration, both as counsel and as arbitrator.

A graduate in Law from the University of Barcelona and holder of a Master’s in European Law from the University of Liège, Fernando was not only a leading practitioner but also an educator. He served as an associate professor of Private International Law at Esade Law School and lectured in the Master of Law program at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).

Before joining Pérez-Llorca, Fernando worked as a partner at Cortés. His excellence in dispute resolution earned him recognition from international directories such as Chambers Europe, which identified him as a reference figure in the field.

Pérez-Llorca highlights Fernando’s career as one characterized by “integrity, approachability, and camaraderie, both with clients and colleagues.” His passing is a profound loss for the legal community and all who had the privilege to work alongside him.

Fernando de la Mata will be remembered for his exceptional contributions to the legal profession and his unwavering commitment to those he served and worked with.
