Miranda hires eight lawyers across practices
Miranda has added eight lawyers to its ranks across seven practice areas, in a move the law firm describes as part of its growth and consolidation strategy. The new hires join the tax, corporate & commercial, projects and infrastructure, transport and aviation, real estate, European & competition law and labour teams.
Filipe Machado e Costa joins the tax team as of counsel, with around 20 years of experience, having previously worked at the Banco de Portugal, the Portuguese government, the government of Timor-Leste and Garrigues. He holds a master’s degree in Business Law from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and a master’s in Finance from Nova School of Business and Economics. The tax practice also welcomes Joana Morais Batalha, associate, who is completing her master’s in tax law at Universidade Católica Portuguesa and has previously collaborated on legal research projects and internships at other law firms.
Miranda also announced the return of Saul Fonseca as of counsel to the corporate & commercial, projects and infrastructure, and transport and aviation practices. Fonseca, who has more than 20 years of experience, was a senior associate at Miranda between 2006 and 2018 before moving to TAP Air Portugal and, more recently, PLMJ.
Real estate, competition and labour additions
In real estate and corporate & commercial, Miranda has added Beatriz de Matos Barradas as associate, a lawyer previously at Eversheds Sutherland Portugal, holding a law degree from the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa, a degree in Political Science and International Relations from Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and a postgraduate qualification in Real Estate Law. The real estate team also gains João Quaresma Xavier, associate, a lawyer with more than three years of experience in real estate and customs law, who previously worked at Vertical Advogados and, before that, at BNP Paribas in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing. He holds a law degree from Universidade Católica Portuguesa along with postgraduate qualifications in Customs Law and Real Estate Law.
Ana Wallis de Carvalho joins the European & competition law practice as associate. With around five years of experience, she has previously worked at DLA Piper on national and EU competition law matters and completed a secondment at Bolt Operations OÜ. She holds a law degree from NOVA School of Law and a master’s in European Union Law from Erasmus University Rotterdam School of Law, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Law and Economics at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa.
The labour practice welcomes Sofia Pizarro Bravo as associate. Previously at Albuquerque & Almeida Advogados, where she focused on employment law, she holds a law degree from the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra and a postgraduate qualification in labour law from the same institution. The practice also sees the return of Nádia Ferreira, counsel, who previously worked at Miranda earlier in her career and has more than 15 years of experience in Portugal and Angola in legal consulting and leadership roles, mainly in labour law, corporate law and immigration. She holds a law degree from the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa.
Firm commentary
Nuno Cabeçadas, managing partner of Miranda, said the lawyers joining the firm “come from very different backgrounds, including regulators, the state, large companies and both national and international law firms”. He noted that “some have long careers while others are starting out, and that this diversity is what the firm wants in its team, as it allows the firm to look at clients’ problems from different angles and find more complete answers and solutions”.
