Mattarella receives World Jurist Association at the Quirinale

Italian President Sergio Mattarella received a delegation from the World Jurist Association and the World Law Foundation at the Quirinale, led by their president, Javier Cremades. Fiona Papajorgji, President of the Constitutional Court of Albania, also attended the meeting.

In his opening remarks, Mattarella stressed the central importance of the rule of law and the relationship between law, power and the protection of fundamental rights. “The law must provide the foundation for the exercise of power while, at the same time, defining its limits and scope,” the President said, recalling how the experience of 20th-century totalitarian regimes had demonstrated that “formal legality alone is not sufficient to guarantee the rule of law”.

Also attending were Lucio Ghia, one of the founders of the World Jurist Association; Aldo Scaringella, founder and CEO of LC Publishing; and Juango Ospina, Colombia’s new ambassador in Brussels and to NATO.

During the meeting, Cremades presented Mattarella with a copy of the Italian edition of his book Sobre el imperio de la ley, published by LC Publishing under the title Sull’impero della legge – Giustizia, libertà e futuro della democrazia (On the Rule of Law – Justice, Freedom and the Future of Democracy).
