Businesses must include lawyers on boards (Event Summary)

The Latin American Lawyer hosted its first Latin American Cafe in Bogota in November 2016. The event brought together leading lawyers as well as board secretaries and members at top Colombian and multinational companies to discuss challenges faced when implementing good governance policies focused on mitigating risk. This is a video summary with the conclusions of the event. In Spanish only.

Summary

– Businesses must include lawyers on boards to ensure compliance.

– Board members’ roles should be professionalised, which should involve training.

– There should be a clear distinction drawn between the role of the lawyer acting as a board member and the role of lawyers acting as external advisors to the board.

– Shareholder activism can be a catalyst for change when implementing good governance principles and adopting technology to manage risk.
