Held every year, Iberian Lawyer’s Forty under 40 Awards, honor lawyers across Spain and Portugal under the age of 40. The winners include only lawyers working in private practice. This year, the awards ceremony is being held on 26th September in Espacio Harley (C/Alcalá,182) Madrid – the Ceremony will be followed by a Gala Reception
NEW from 2019 – the Forty under 40 Awards will be per category rewarding 20 individual and 20 team awards per category.
The Jury members will be a group of over 60 General Counsel and Head of Legal. The names are announced here.

Forty under 40 Awards. Selection Rules 2019
ART. 1 – Promoter, purpose and period of validity: It is an initiative promoted by Iberian Legal Group, iberianlawyer.com, with the purpose, among other things, of stimulating competitiveness amongst young talented lawyers. In the year 2019 the “Forty under 40” (hereinafter, “Initiative”) are organised with the aim of recognizing the excellence of lawyers from law firms under 40 years of age, for their remarkable results carried out for a year from May 2018 up to April 2019 (hereinafter, “Period of validity”).
The Initiative is governed by the rules indicated below.
ART. 2 – Rules for participation and selection: participation in the Initiative is reserved for lawyers in private practice / law firms
– Working in Spain and Portugal
– Spanish and Portuguese working abroad as well as
– Lawyers working in a Spanish or Portuguese law firm around the world.
Candidates must be born after 31th May 1979
– Identification and classification of candidates.
Candidates will be preliminarily identified through submission forms ( the deadline for entry submissions has been EXTENDED to 31st May 2019 23:59h CET), together with the results of the research carried out by Iberian Lawyer during the period of validity. References from clients will be very valuable. Then a list of finalists will be included in one or more categories and will be presented to the Jury for a final assessment.
PHASES TO SELECT THE FINALISTS
a. First phase: All submissions received will be examined by a pre-selection committee at Iberian Lawyer.
The submission form has to focus on the details of challenging, unique or market relevant legal work led by a lawyer under 40 ( for individual category) or undertaken by a team of lawyers that at least 60% are under the age of forty. There are 20 individual categories and 20 team categories, but all the information will be shared in the same submission form.
Please tell us if any information provided in the application is confidential.
Written submissions can be sent by the applicant or their organisation. Lawyers might also nominate colleagues who will be invited to submit at their own discretion.
b. Second phase: List of finalists after online voting.
A short-list of finalists for each category will be published after the onling voting, which will be available until mid July 2019.
c. Third phase: Jury voting / Winner selection
The winners per category will be selected by the Jury and announced on the Gala night.The winners will be determined based on the complexity of the legal work undertaken by the candidates individually or by their teams (value, legal challenge, creative solution) during the period of validity (one year from May 2018 – April 2019).
The Jury comprises of a selected group of 50 General Counsel or Heads of Legal with a good understanding of the Iberian market.
ART. 3 – Communication of the finalists and winners: the communication of the names of the shortlisted finalists for each of categories will take place on September 2nd 2019, however winners will be announced on 26th September in Madrid from 8:00 p.m. during the Forty under 40 Awards Gala taking place at Espacio Harley Madrid (C/Alcalá, 182).
Iberian Legal Group SL reserves the right to inform the shortlisted / finalists more details about the modality of their participation and the development of the Gala.
ART. 4 – Award ceremony: Finalists and winners will be announced for each of the categories during the Gala. The award will not have a financial value, since it is a public recognition of purely symbolic nature.The award will be given to the best finalist by category, who will have to personally attend the Gala and collect it.
If the award is not collected during the Gala personally by the interested party or in the case of a team by at least one management representative representing the team, it will be irrevocably considered as a waiver of the award , and will automatically be assigned to the second best scored per category. Iberian awyer authorizes the shortlisted and winners to use the image rights linked to the “Forty under 40 Awards – 2019 edition”.

The submission form has to focus on the details of challenging, unique or market relevant legal work led by a lawyer under 40 ( for individual category) or undertaken by a team of lawyers that at least 60% are under the age of forty. There are 20 individual categories and 20 team categories, but all the information will be shared in the same submission form.

b. Second phase: List of finalists after online voting.
A short-list of finalists for each category will be published after the onling voting, which will be available until mid July 2019.
c. Third phase: Jury voting / Winner selection
The winners per category will be selected by the Jury and announced on the Gala night.The winners will be determined based on the complexity of the legal work undertaken by the candidates individually or by their teams (value, legal challenge, creative solution) during the period of validity (one year from May 2018 – April 2019).
The Jury comprises of a selected group of 50 General Counsel or Heads of Legal with a good understanding of the Iberian market.
ART. 3 – Communication of the finalists and winners: the communication of the names of the shortlisted finalists for each of categories will take place on September 2nd 2019, however winners will be announced on 26th September in Madrid from 8:00 p.m. during the Forty under 40 Awards Gala taking place at Espacio Harley Madrid (C/Alcalá, 182).
Iberian Legal Group SL reserves the right to inform the shortlisted / finalists more details about the modality of their participation and the development of the Gala.
ART. 4 – Award ceremony: Finalists and winners will be announced for each of the categories during the Gala. The award will not have a financial value, since it is a public recognition of purely symbolic nature.The award will be given to the best finalist by category, who will have to personally attend the Gala and collect it.
If the award is not collected during the Gala personally by the interested party or in the case of a team by at least one management representative representing the team, it will be irrevocably considered as a waiver of the award , and will automatically be assigned to the second best scored per category. Iberian awyer authorizes the shortlisted and winners to use the image rights linked to the “Forty under 40 Awards – 2019 edition”.
