Alexandre Miguel Mestre runs for COP presidency

Alexandre Miguel Mestre has ended his collaboration with Abreu Advogados, the law firm where he was a consultant in sports law for the past decade, to run for the presidency of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP). The COP elections are scheduled for March this year.

“It was over 10 years of joint work, very rewarding and enriching in the practice of the profession. I decided to take a new direction in my career and dedicate myself to other personal and professional interests, such as the Olympic Movement”, explains Alexandre Mestre.

One of the most prominent lawyers in the field of sports law, he served as secretary of State for Sports and Youth in the 19th Constitutional Government from June 2011 to May 2013. Mestre has also been a member of the Portuguese Olympic Academy (AOP), part of the Portuguese Olympic Committee, since 1997, serving as a Board Member for 10 years. Since 2014, he has also been a member of the Pierre de Coubertin International Committee.

“I am very proud to have been part of the history of Abreu Advogados. I leave with strong bonds of friendship and respect for the people and the firm itself, which has become a benchmark in Portuguese law”, says the lawyer. The only role Alexandre Mestre will maintain while running for COP president is that of university professor. He is the coordinator of the postgraduate program in Sports Law, offered by the UAL Academy of the Autonomous University of Lisbon, where he teaches, among other subjects, olympic law.
