Addleshaw Goddard advises Hispasat on IRIS2

Addleshaw Goddard has advised Hispasat on the conclusion of negotiations that secure the continuity of IRIS², the future European secure satellite communications constellation with commercial and military applications in strategically sensitive areas, driven by the European Union.

The SpaceRISE consortium, formed by the three European operators Hispasat, Eutelsat and SES together with the European Commission and the European Space Agency, has defined the development and deployment plan for the European secure satellite communications system, targeting first launches in 2029 and entry into service in 2030.

On 7 August, the European Commission and the SpaceRISE consortium signed the implementation agreement that will accelerate the deployment of IRIS². The programme will incorporate 66 new satellites, bringing the constellation to 342 satellites and paving the way for its large-scale deployment, with mixed public-private financing expected to reach €15.6 billion.

The team

The Addleshaw Goddard team, led by Roberto Pomares, Managing Partner, together with Rosa Chen, Senior Associate, advised Hispasat and the SpaceRISE consortium throughout the negotiation process with the European Commission and the European Space Agency, providing legal support on the complex contractual, governance and structuring aspects required to ensure the continuity and evolution of the project, in which the firm has been involved since its inception.
