Proença de Carvalho opens in Porto with two new partners

Proença de Carvalho has opened an office in Porto, located in the Boavista area at Rua Aristides de Sousa Mendes, 225, 1st floor. The firm has brought in two partners from Vieira de Almeida to launch the project: Miguel Gonzalez Amado, a tax lawyer who will head the office, and Pedro Duarte Batista, who works in Corporate and M&A.

The opening is part of the firm’s growth strategy and extends its national presence. It is intended to bring the firm closer to companies, institutions and investors in the North of Portugal, says the law firm.

Francisco Proença de Carvalho, founding partner, and André Matias de Almeida, partner, said: “Opening an office in Porto is the natural response to the demand we have seen from clients in the North and a statement of confidence in the development the region has been experiencing. We want to be closer to them, with the same values we enshrined in our Manifesto from the outset, and which characterise this brand, present in the Portuguese market for several decades: trust, courage, vision, precision and proximity. While working in close synergy with the Lisbon office, it will be an office built and led by people from the region.”

New partners

Gonzalez Amado, partner and head of the Porto office, said: “Creating, from Porto, an office dedicated to the Northern business community and to the international investors who choose the region, and doing so at Proença de Carvalho, with its hallmark of proximity, trust, precision, confidentiality and agility, is a challenge impossible to turn down. These are values deeply characteristic of the client–lawyer relationship in this region, rooted in a law firm that has the advantage of having been built on a historic brand, yet designed with the current challenges facing the legal profession in mind.”

Pedro Duarte Batista, partner in Corporate and M&A, added: “Northern companies combine tradition and innovation, just like Proença de Carvalho, and face demanding challenges such as generational succession, growth, or the arrival of new national and international partners and investors. It is with a local team that knows the region in depth that we want to support them in the transactions that will shape their future.”

About the firm

The Proença de Carvalho brand was founded by Daniel Proença de Carvalho, father of Francisco Proença de Carvalho. He began his career in sole practice and later founded Proença de Carvalho & Associados. That firm merged in 2010 with Uría Menéndez, becoming Uría Menéndez – Proença de Carvalho in Portugal. The association ended in August 2024, when Francisco Proença de Carvalho, a partner there since 2013, decided to leave the firm.

The brand returned as an independent firm in 2025 and now has 25 lawyers, including 10 partners.
