Stephenson Harwood names Juan Oñate managing partner in Madrid
Stephenson Harwood has confirmed that restructuring and insolvency specialist Juan Oñate is joining the firm as managing partner of its Madrid office, departing from Pérez-Llorca to take on the role. According to the law firm, the appointment marks a key step in it’s “strategy to build a full-service presence in Spain and the wider Iberian market”.
Oñate brings experience advising on cross-border insolvency and restructuring matters, including the negotiation and approval of restructuring agreements, the purchase and recovery of non-performing loan portfolios, the defence of clawback actions and directors’ liability claims, M&A in pre-insolvency and insolvency situations, and civil and commercial litigation. His client base spans listed companies, major Spanish corporate groups, foreign investors, funds and banks.
His arrival follows the previously announced move of partners Jesús Almoguera, Carlos Gonzalez and Eduardo Vazquez from Spanish boutique firm J Almoguera Abogados to Stephenson Harwood.
Expansion strategy
The Madrid office forms part of Stephenson Harwood’s international growth plan, aimed at strengthening its capabilities across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, states the law firm. CEO Eifion Morris noted that the firm has “an exciting group of lawyers lined up to join” in Madrid, reflecting broader market interest in the firm’s expansion plans in Spain.
