Cuatrecasas appoints five new partners and four counsels

Cuatrecasas has appointed five new partners. Three of them are lawyers promoted from within the firm: Borja Álvarez (Arbitration), Vanessa Castelló (Tax Litigation), and Xavier Morera (Corporate), all in Spain; and two are new hires: Amory Heine (Tax, Chile) and Francisco Iso (Corporate, Spain). The appointments were made during the partners meeting held by the firm on April 16 in Madrid. During the meeting, the appointment of four new counsels was also announced: Javier Calle (Tax), Javier Díaz (Public Law), Estefanía Portillo (Litigation), and Cristina Vila (Competition), all in Spain.

Borja Álvarez focuses on complex litigation with an international dimension, commercial arbitration, and investment arbitration. His practice includes disputes arising from M&A transactions and work in the energy, infrastructure, construction, and real estate sectors. He handles proceedings for the recognition and enforcement of international awards and judgments, as well as precautionary measures. He is a member of the Madrid and New York Bar Associations.

Vanessa Castelló specializes in tax litigation, advising on administrative and court claims, tax management, collection, and inspection procedures. She also advises high-net-worth individuals on personal and wealth taxation, particularly in the sports and entertainment sectors. She is a member of the Madrid Bar Association and the Spanish Association of Tax Advisors (AEDAF).

Amory Heine brings experience in taxation, tax litigation, and wealth planning from international firms where she co-led multijurisdictional tax practices in Latin America. She has led and coordinated specialized teams and participated in advanced tax training programs.

Francisco Iso advises on private equity, venture capital, and leveraged buyouts, working with national and international funds on private and public-to-private transactions. His practice includes mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic agreements, with particular focus on the aerospace and defense industry. He is a member of the Barcelona Bar Association.

Xavier Morera handles M&A transactions, private equity, and venture capital investments, as well as incentive plans and rollover structures. He advises funds, corporations, founders, and technology startups on investments across various sectors, with emphasis on technology. He also provides corporate and commercial law advice and serves as secretary to the board of directors of several companies.

Counsel appointments

The newly-appointed counsels are Javier Calle (Tax), Javier Díaz (Public Law), Estefanía Portillo (Litigation), and Cristina Vila (Competition).

Javier Calle specializes in corporate tax advice for financial and debt transactions, including financing, refinancing, bond issuances, securitizations, debt restructuring, and acquisition of distressed portfolios. He advises large companies and investors in the financial and real estate sectors on direct and indirect taxation. He is a member of the Madrid Bar Association.

Javier Díaz advises companies and public administrations on administrative law, public procurement, urban planning, and environmental and punitive administrative law. He participates in drafting tender documents and internal instructions, as well as precontractual and contractual appeals and judicial reviews. He is a member of the Bizkaia Bar Association.

Estefanía Portillo focuses on civil litigation, arbitration, and mediation, with experience in class action lawsuits and litigation related to civil and commercial contracts. She advises clients in the consumer, real estate, construction, and engineering sectors. She is a member of the Spanish and Ibero-American Arbitration Club and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).

Cristina Vila advises national and international clients on investigations before competition authorities, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory matters. Her practice includes proceedings before the European Commission, the Spanish Markets and Competition Commission, and the courts of the European Union, as well as regulatory compliance in competition law. She is a member of the Barcelona Bar Association.
