ICAM launches Mental Health Initiative for Lawyers

In recognition of World Mental Health Day on October 10, the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM) is highlighting the mental health challenges faced by legal professionals. According to a recent study, nearly 70% of Madrid’s lawyers have experienced anxiety, while almost half report fatigue, depressive thoughts, and emotional distress.

To address these issues, the association has introduced the “ICAM Mental Health Kit,” designed to help lawyers manage workplace stress and emotional well-being. The kit, which resembles a first-aid box, provides educational resources aimed at promoting mental health awareness and support within law firms.

ICAM’s Dean, Eugenio Ribón, emphasizes the importance of mental health for the legal profession: “The well-being of our lawyers is a priority. This initiative promotes a culture of prevention and support that benefits both individuals and law firms.”

The kit includes a digital disconnection plan, encouraging lawyers to limit work hours and avoid over-connection, along with practical tips for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It also outlines emergency response protocols and compensation for off-hour work.

Additionally, the initiative provides best practices for law firm leaders, focusing on early identification of mental health issues and stress management. The guide encourages flexible work policies, open communication, and leadership-driven wellness programs to support a healthier, more productive workplace.

Ana Buitrago, ICAM’s Deputy and Vice President of the ICAM Cortina Foundation, highlights the broader goal: “It’s essential for both professionals and law firms to take proactive measures for mental health. These guides help create healthier and more supportive work environments.”
