ECIJA and Lefebvre present Memento on Digital Law at ICAM
ECIJA and Lefebvre have unveiled their new Memento de Derecho Digital, a comprehensive guide addressing the legal challenges posed by emerging technologies such as blockchain, 5G, NFTs, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The presentation took place at the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM) and included an analysis of the European AI Regulation.
Mabel Klimt (pictured left), ICAM’s technology deputy, opened the event, comparing the evolution of digital law to Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which initially faced misunderstanding. Klimt noted how digital law has transformed from a niche field into a crucial, cross-disciplinary legal area.
ECIJA’s Managing Partner, Alejandro Touriño (pictured centre), highlighted AI’s growing role across industries, while other panelists discussed cybersecurity threats and the need for regulatory frameworks, emphasizing public-private collaboration.
Ignacio Gomá Garcés, Senior Director of Public Affairs at FTI Consulting, emphasized the importance of AI regulation, stating, “Law is necessary but not sufficient. Public and private collaboration is essential to safely address the opportunities and challenges AI will bring.” Meanwhile, Irene Agúndez, Director of Legal Services at Iberdrola, highlighted the ongoing issue of cyberattacks on large companies, noting, “Cyberattacks are tough because security measures don’t guarantee 100% results. We’re all in this together and must collaborate more to protect ourselves.”
During the event, in which Susana Izquierdo (pictured right), Lefebvre’s Editorial Director, also participated, experts also debated the EU’s DORA (Digital Operational Resilience Act) regulation and its impact on European companies. The consensus was that the regulation enhances minimum cybersecurity standards, reinforcing protection against potential threats to corporate integrity.
