Uría Menéndez advises Swiss Life in Educare Group acquisition
Uría Menéndez has advised Swiss Life Asset Managers on the acquisition of a controlling stake in Educare Group, a leading Spanish operator of charter schools. The transaction, valued at around €200 million, strengthens Swiss Life’s footprint in Spain’s growing education sector.
Educare, owned by the Abarca Cidón family—also founders and owners of HM Hospitales—and Carlos Madruga (president and CEO), operates eight charter schools in the Madrid region: Valdefuentes, Torrevilano, Peñalvento, Peñalar, Parque, Montesclaros, Antamira and Antanes School. Together, these schools serve approximately 10,000 students and employ 700 teachers in neighborhoods experiencing significant population growth.
Swiss Life Asset Managers, which manages close to €140 billion, secured the majority stake in Educare with BNP Paribas advising the sellers and Rothschild advising the buyer.
The Uría Menéndez legal team was led by Manuel Echenique (partner, M&A-Private Equity, Madrid) and Guillermo del Río (partner, M&A-Private Equity, Madrid), supported by Alejandro Fuentes (associate), Jesús Andreu (associate), and Miguel Recio (trainee lawyer).
