Ramón y Cajal Recovers Seized Artwork from Burgos City Hall

Ramón y Cajal Abogados‘s expert Art Law team, led by partners Rafael Mateu de Ros and coordinated by Patricia Fernández Lorenzo, PhD, has provided legal counsel to the De La Sota family in their successful effort to reclaim the painting “Portrait of a Lady” (also known as “Portrait of the Marquise of Llano”), attributed to Anton Raphael Mengs in the 18th century. This artwork, which was seized during the Spanish Civil War, was located at Burgos City Hall.

The recovery of this historically significant painting adds to previous successful restitutions facilitated by Ramón y Cajal Abogados, including the paintings “Portrait of a Gentleman” by the Flemish artist Pourbus the Younger and “Portrait of Queen María Cristina de Borbón” by López Portaña in 2022, which were located at the Parador de Turismo de Almagro.
