Paxlegal launches human rights practice area

Paxlegal has just announced the launch of a new practice area: human rights. Emellin de Oliveira, who until now headed the human rights department at FiO Legal, joins the firm as coordinating lawyer.

According to Bárbara Pestana, founding partner of Paxlegal: “The creation of this practice area is particularly relevant for us, as we want to be even closer to our clients, defending not only their legal interests but also their fundamental rights. At a time when issues such as family protection, equality, freedom of movement and non-discrimination are becoming increasingly important, we feel it is our duty to offer a legal practice that combines technical excellence with a deep respect for human dignity.”

Emellin de Oliveira has experience in immigration, asylum, nationality and human rights. In recent years, she has handled numerous cases related to the administrative detention of foreign nationals, domestic and gender-based violence, harassment, discrimination and workplace xenophobia.

She is a researcher at CEDIS – NOVA School of Law, as well as coordinator and lecturer of the Postgraduate Programme in Immigration and Nationality Law at NOVA School of Law Executive Education. She is co-founder and executive coordinator of the NOVA Asylum Policy Lab and a member of the Observatory for the Protection of Personal Data. In parallel, Oliveira has provided consultancy to several international and European projects, and regularly participates as speaker in training initiatives for public and private entities, both in Portugal and abroad. She is the author of several scientific articles in the fields of migration, asylum, border control and human rights.
