KPMG launches legal practice in Portugal
KPMG in Portugal has launched KPMG Law, a new law firm entering the Portuguese legal market with a team of seven partners and a presence in both Lisbon and Porto. The firm is positioned to offer an integrated approach combining legal services with KPMG’s existing Advisory, Assurance and Tax capabilities.
KPMG Law is led by Luís Magalhães, partner and member of the Executive Committee of KPMG in Portugal, who serves as head of KPMG Law Portugal. The firm launches with seven partners covering a broad range of practice areas: Bernardo Almeida Azevedo (Public Law and Litigation), Dzhamil Oda (Competition, EU Law and Regulation, transiting from Morais Leitão), João Afonso (Corporate, M&A and Cross-Border Transactions, from Morais Leitão), Jorge Cortez (Corporate and M&A, from Morais Leitão), Manuel Gouveia Pereira (Environment & Climate, Natural Resources and ESG, joining from GPA), Marta Gouveia Gomes (Real Estate, Construction, Tourism and Urban Planning, joining from Deloitte Legal Telles) and Samantha Cyrne (Corporate, M&A and Private Clients, joining from Cuatrecasas).
“This is a strategic step in the evolution of KPMG in Portugal, strengthening our ability to offer clients a truly integrated and differentiated response to the increasingly complex challenges they face. The legal function is no longer isolated and is now embedded in business decision-making, in coordination with tax, financial, regulatory and technological dimensions. With KPMG Law, we deepen this integration and position ourselves to support our clients in an even more comprehensive way”, said Vitor Ribeirinho, senior partner/CEO of KPMG in Portugal.
“KPMG Law was created because there is room for a distinct value proposition, built on legal excellence, true multidisciplinarity, global reach and the effective use of technology. Companies are increasingly seeking support from those who understand not only the law, but also their business, the sector in which they operate, the various risks, taxation, regulation and transformation. It is at this intersection that we aim to create impact and value”, said Luís Magalhães.
Market positioning and growth plans
KPMG Law in Portugal is part of the global KPMG Law network, which comprises around 4,000 lawyers in more than 100 countries. This international dimension is intended to support Portuguese groups operating across multiple geographies, companies undergoing international expansion, and international groups with a presence or investment in Portugal.
Technology is presented as a core pillar of the new firm, which was built without legacy systems. The firm intends to integrate artificial intelligence, automation and data management into its teams’ activities, with a focus on digital transformation, ESG and sustainability matters.
KPMG Law has set a target of exceeding 70 professionals within the next two years, expanding progressively from its current launch team.
