Juan Antonio Xiol, new Cuatrecasas counsel

Cuatrecasas has strengthened its Cassation and Special Appeals practice group with the appointment of Juan Antonio Xiol as a new counsel. With more than fifty years of proven experience, he is a specialist in litigation and civil law, having held several important positions in the judiciary, including his work as a judge of the First and Third Chambers of the Supreme Court and vice-president of the Constitutional Court.

A graduate in Law from the University of Barcelona, Xiol entered the judicial career by competitive examination in 1972. In 1975 he became a contentious magistrate, being number one in his promotion, and in 1982 he was appointed Secretary General of the Constitutional Court. He has been a judge of the Contentious Chamber of the Supreme Court and presided over the Fourth and Seventh Sections of the Third Chamber and the First Chamber of this court. Also elected member of the CGPJ by the Senate and, subsequently, the Plenary of this body appointed him president of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court. He has been a judge of the Constitutional Court from June 2013 to December 2022. In November 2021, after the partial renewal of the Constitutional Court, the Plenary unanimously appointed him vice-president, a position he has held until the end of his term on December 31, 2022.

With an extensive and respected professional career, Juan Antonio Xiol has been Director General of Relations with the Administration of Justice and is a member of the General Codification Commission. Throughout his career, he has been distinguished with the Pelayo Award for Jurists of Recognized Prestige (2009). As well as, decorated with the Grand Cross of San Raimundo de Peñafort and of the Order of Isabella the Catholic (2010).
