ISC 2024: Madrid Hosts Global Sports Law Dialogue

The fifth edition of the ISDE Sports Convention (ISC), the only international congress on sports law and industry organized by an academic institution, the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE), in collaboration with LaLiga, will once again transform Madrid into the world’s capital of the sports industry and law. This edition will take place on June 7th in the capital of Spain.

ISC 2024, targeting senior representatives and executives from sports law firms, Marketing and Communication directors, and specialized students in sports law, will delve into topics such as the Leading cases of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS); Madrid’s example, which will host the Formula One World Championship again in 2026, as a model city for organizing sports events; the rise of contact sports and the phenomenon of Ilia Topuria, the Spanish-Georgian UFC world champion; and new business models in football, such as the football boom in the Middle East following the arrival of players like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Moreover, ISC 2024 will address the future perspectives of sports from the entertainment and technology standpoint, as well as the challenges and opportunities offered by the management and development of women’s sports, among other key industry issues.

Organized in a hybrid format, combining in-person and streaming options, ISC 2024 coincides with the year of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, where the Spanish delegation will aim to surpass the 22 medals achieved in Barcelona’92, and the UEFA European Championship in Germany. This congress will complement the extensive calendar of events that position Madrid as the international sports hub alongside events like the Laureus World Sports Awards, considered the Oscars of sports, the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament, the Spanish Open golf championship, the Madrid Marathon, and the San Silvestre Vallecana race.

NEW EDITION OF ISC AWARDS

Nearly 600 congress participants from over 40 countries attended the previous edition of this international sports law and industry forum, a sector that contributes 3.3 percent of Spain’s GDP and over 414,000 jobs to the economy.

During the event, the ISC awards were presented to LaLiga President Javier Tebas for his professional trajectory leading the clubs’ association for a decade; former footballer Luis Figo, the Legend, for being one of the greatest wingers in football history; and former player Fernando Llorente, in recognition of his sporting career, which includes winning the World Cup and European Championship with the Spanish national team.

Former Spanish rugby sevens captain Patricia García received the award for Madrid’s best athlete after winning the European championship, competing in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and being named in the world’s ideal seven team on multiple occasions.

The winners of the ISC 2024 awards will be announced on June 7th during a ceremony presided over by ISDE’s Managing Director, Juan José Sánchez Puig (pictured).

The V ISDE Sports Convention is sponsored and supported by LaLiga, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM).
