Iberian Lawyer’s first Study of In-House Lawyers and its inaugural ‘Gold Awards’
Today, Thursday December 13th, 2012, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid, Iberian Lawyer unveiled the results of the first ‘In-House Lawyers Study’ in Spain, and debuted its annual ‘Gold Awards’.
Times have changed dramatically, and In-House Counsel must now adopt a business approach to the management and contracting of legal services, says Iñigo Cisneros, Head of Legal at GESE Holding and coordinator of the Study in collaboration with Iberian Lawyer magazine.
Therefore, Iberian lawyer, with the help of its In-House Club and Iñigo Cisneros, Head of Legal at GESE Holding and former Head of Legal at Gamesa, conducted a Study on this very issue. Of the 200 General Counsel and Heads of Legal invited to participate, from the IBEX 35 and other domestic companies with a turnover of over €300m, over 90 percent responded.
Among others, the Study addressed issues such as the shifting pricing models, increasing use of fixed budgets, the emergence of ‘paralegals’ and ‘secondments’, the importance of compliance, trends in outsourcing and the selection criteria of external offices.
The results were also debated today by a panel of General Counsel including Beatriz Martinez-Falero (Mahou-San Miguel), Juan Venegas (ADVEO), Javier Somoza (Pullmantur), Pablo Darna (Hospital Clínico) and, Luis Elías (Grupo Planeta).
The Study’s conclusions shed a light on the In-House Lawyer market in Spain as has never been done before. And the key, says Cisneros, centres around effectiveness and creativity.

The ‘Gold Awards’
The Study was designed by members of Iberian Lawyer’s In-House Club, who also wanted to highlight what they saw as best practice among their external law firms. As part of the research, therefore, Heads of Legal from Spain’s largest companies were asked to nominate law firms in order of priority in three distinct categories.
On the basis of this, Iberian Lawyer launched the first of its ‘Gold Awards’, and today presented the winners with their awards at the event.
