HSF hires former Mapfre´s general counsel
Herbert Smith Freehills has recruited Claudio Ramos, who joins the firm´s Spanish office as a consultant to strengthen the Insurance practice
This practice, led by Paulino Fajardo, is one of the growth commitments of the firm’s Madrid office, which maintains the strategy of attracting the best talent and incorporating recognised professionals with extensive experience in the sector, as is the case of Francisco Montiano, former general counsel at Mapfre Global Risks. The incorporation of Claudio Ramos (pictured) reinforces the firm’s capacity in the Corporate and Regulatory Insurance area not only in the Madrid office, but also in the rest of the European offices (London, Paris, Frankfurt and Milan), given his extensive experience in international operations, both in Europe and Latin America.
Throughout his professional career in the Mapfre Group, Ramos has held the positions of director of the International Legal Department of Mapfre; secretary and member of the Board of Directors of Mapfre International, as well as member of the Boards of Directors of Mapfre RE, Mapfre Brazil, Mapfre Portugal and Mapfre USA. He has also been director and secretary of the Board of Directors of Banco Financiero Mapfre Caja Madrid, and director of the bank’s Legal department. Ramos has also been a member of the Mergers and Acquisitions Committee, director and member of the Internal Control and Risk Committee of Verti Assicurazioni (Italy), director of Verti Versicherung (Germany); vice-secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Mapfre Foundation; and member of the Board of Directors and head of the reinsurance group of the Spanish Section of AIDA (International Association of Insurance Law).
Ramos was awarded two consecutive years (2019 and 2020) with the recognition “In-house Counsel of the Year-Insurance” by Iberian Lawyer. He currently combines his professional practice with his teaching, as a lecturer on the Master’s degree in Access to the Legal Profession at the Universidad CEU San Pablo (Insurance Law).
For Miguel Riaño, managing partner of the firm in Spain, “the incorporation of great experts in the sector such as Claudio, will allow us to continue strengthening a practice in constant growth and in which we expect a great deal of activity. Our commitment is to strengthen our advice to the maximum in the market through the most qualified professionals.”.
