Eversheds Sutherland hires Óscar Báscones, former head of Banco Santander’s Legal Department in Spain, as of counsel

Eversheds Sutherland has hired Óscar Báscones as new of counsel in the Banking and Finance Department of the firm’s Spanish office, to increase the firm’s service offering and the development of new strategic initiatives.

Jacobo Martínez, managing partner of Eversheds Sutherland in Spain, assures that “Oscar’s professional quality and his deep knowledge of the market will be key to deepen the specialization of our financial services, which will allow us to further strengthen this strategic practice for our clients”.

Óscar Báscones

Báscones, who until January of this year was director of the Legal Department of Santander Spain, has extensive experience in corporate governance positions in supervised entities, both at the Bank of Spain and the Directorate General of Insurance.

Throughout his professional career in the Santander Group, which he joined in 1990 as legal advisor, he has held the positions of general director of Legal and Compliance Services of Santander Spain and director of the Legal Department of Commercial Banking, Private Banking, Means of Payment and Insurance of Santander.

He is currently non-executive chairman of Diners Club Spain, a company dedicated to the issuance of credit cards and travel accounts, and non-executive chairman of Santander Mediación Operador de Banca Seguros Vinculado. He has also been non-executive chairman of Santander Lease and Santander Factoring and Confirming, as well as director of Sociedad Integral de Valoraciones Automatizadas (SIVASA).

At the same time, from 2009 until January 2024, he held the position of vice-president of the Spanish Mortgage Association, an association of financial institutions that operate in the field of mortgage financing, which concentrates more than 90% of the sector’s activity.

Education

Báscones holds a law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a master’s degree in business law from the Instituto de Empresa. He also holds a diploma in real estate law from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a management development program from IESE (Universidad de Navarra). He is currently the director of the Course of Access to the Legal Profession at the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM).
