Eversheds Sutherland hires José Fernández de Mesa as tax counsel

Eversheds Sutherland has appointed José Fernández de Mesa, previously head of the tax department at Banco Cetelem, as counsel in the tax department of the firm’s Spanish office.

The new counsel, who until now has held the position of director of the tax department of Banco Cetelem, has 15 years of experience in comprehensive tax advice to credit institutions and tax planning for Spanish and international financial institutions. Throughout his long career, he has specialised in inspections and all types of tax procedures, as well as in the special group regime for VAT entities at an advanced level, the tax consolidation regime for corporate tax, Economic Interest Groupings, taxation of new contractual relationships, analysis and implementation of new structures and joint ventures, and taxation of new financial products for clients.

He has also acquired in-depth experience in mergers and acquisitions of entities’ financial businesses, as well as in representing them before the Spanish (AEAT) and US (IRS) Tax Authorities, both in inspections and in obtaining valuation agreements and binding consultations from the Directorate General of Taxes.

He holds a degree in Law from the University of Francisco de Vitoria and a master’s degree in corporate tax consultancy from IE Law School. He began his professional career at Garrigues, after which he held the position of director of the Tax Department at Evo Banco. In 2018, he joined Banco Cetelem as director of the tax department. He completes his training with an executive master’s degree in Business Law from Harvard Law School-Centro de Estudios Garrigues.
