Cremades receives honoris causa from Tirana U.
Javier Cremades, president of the World Jurist Association (WJA) and the World Law Foundation, and founder of law firm Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo, received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Tirana.
The distinction was awarded in recognition of his contribution to the strengthening of the rule of law, the promotion of human rights, international dialogue, and his influence in advancing the values of justice and freedom on the global stage.
Laudatio and key speakers
The laudatio was delivered by Ricardo Gil Lavedra, current president of the Buenos Aires Bar Association and a prominent figure in the Spanish-speaking legal world, who presided as a judge over the civilian tribunal that tried Argentina’s military dictatorship — a historic moment depicted in the film Argentina, 1985.
Upon receiving the honour, Cremades stated that “the rule of law is under siege and democracies must recover from fatigue and disillusionment to keep alive the system that has given us the greatest freedom and prosperity.”
The ceremony was attended by presidents of Albanian and foreign courts, senior public officials, university representatives, students, media, civil society, and members of the international legal community.
The profile
Javier Cremades holds a doctorate in law from the University of Regensburg (Germany) and UNED (Spain). He has previously received an honorary doctorate from the International University of Valencia (Spain) and an honorary post-doctorate from the University of Bologna (Italy).
He is also the founder and president of Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo, a law firm operating across 11 cities in several European and Latin American countries.
The WJA, which Cremades leads, was founded in 1963 in Washington, D.C., with the mission of achieving a world governed by law rather than force. It holds special consultative status with the United Nations and is present in 85 countries. The World Law Foundation, established following the 2019 Madrid Declaration during the World Law Congress, serves as the WJA’s executive arm, promoting dialogue and harmony among nations and the defence of individual freedoms.
