Clifford Chance advises on Superliga project
Clifford Chance has acted as exclusive advisor to the European Superleague Company and A22 Sports Management on all legal aspects of the Superleague project, including the legal proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) assessing the monopoly on soccer exercised by UEFA and FIFA.
In a landmark judgment, the CJEU ruled that the market for the organization of sports tournaments is not a monopoly of UEFA and FIFA, that this market must be open to alternative proposals in accordance with the general principles of competition law and that, consequently, European soccer clubs are free to choose their destiny.
The team advising European Superleague Company and A22 Sports Management has been led by partners Luis Alonso, Fernando Irurzun and Miguel Odriozola, with the collaboration of lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont, and with the support of the firm’s counsel Belén Irissarry, Pablo Murcia and Fernando Giménez-Alvear.
