Beatriz Uriarte takes over at Ospina Abogados
Beatriz Uriarte will become managing partner of Spanish criminal law boutique Ospina Abogados, succeeding founder Juan Gonzalo Ospina, who is stepping away from legal practice after being appointed designate ambassador of Colombia to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union and NATO.
The leadership transition marks a new chapter for the Madrid-based firm, which Ospina founded in 2016 and has since developed into one of Spain’s most visible criminal law practices. While Ospina will retain an equity interest in the firm, he will no longer practise law while carrying out his diplomatic responsibilities.
Speaking during a press conference announcing the changes, Ospina described the move as an unexpected opportunity that arrived at a pivotal moment in his career. “I am leaving, but a part of me stays here,” he said, reflecting on his fifteen years in legal practice and ten years leading Ospina Abogados.
The criminal lawyer stressed that the firm’s future was in capable hands, describing Uriarte as “not just part of the firm, but the firm itself”. He highlighted her creativity, determination and litigation skills, adding that he expects the boutique to continue growing under her leadership.
Uriarte has worked alongside Ospina for more than a decade and has built her practice in criminal litigation, including cases involving sexual offences and gender-based violence. The pair have jointly handled some of the firm’s most high-profile matters.
Uriarte outlines growth plans
In her first public remarks as incoming managing partner, Uriarte paid tribute to Ospina’s role in building the firm and pledged to continue its expansion strategy. She confirmed that Ospina Abogados intends to strengthen its national presence following the opening of its Marbella office earlier this year.
“I hope Marbella will not be the only office we have,” Uriarte said. “We receive calls from clients across Spain and we want to continue bringing our passion for criminal law to other cities.”
She also underlined the importance of the relationship between the legal profession and the media, describing the firm as a bridge between advocacy and communication. According to Uriarte, media coverage has played a significant role in ensuring visibility for complex criminal cases and helping clients’ voices be heard.
During the event, Ospina expressed gratitude to colleagues, clients, judges, prosecutors and journalists who have accompanied him throughout his legal career. He also reaffirmed his commitment to public service in his new role representing Colombia before European institutions and NATO.
The transition comes as Ospina Abogados enters its tenth year of operation, with Uriarte assuming responsibility for the day-to-day management of the firm while maintaining its focus on criminal defence and litigation.
