Baker & McKenzie elects new leader

As of July 1st, 2013 José María Alonso is the new Managing Partner at Baker & McKenzie in Madrid. He will also continue as Head of the Litigation and Arbitration Department. Alonso takes over from Luis Briones, who was in the role for four years and decided not to run for re-election. Briones continues as a Tax Partner.

“It is a privilege to have been chosen by my partners to lead the Madrid office,” says Alonso. “Spain continues to face difficult economic challenges, so we will work creatively and tirelessly to continue finding legal solutions for our clients and investors in Spain, and to assist Spanish companies in their internationalisation processes.”
Alonso was former Co-Managing Partner of Garrigues for nine years until 2009, and his appointment to lead another law firm is the first high profile example of such an unusual switch in the top tier of firms in Spain.
Time will tell whether this is a high-profile one-off or whether others will follow suit.
