Alfonso Lamadrid joins Latham’s Brussels Office

Latham & Watkins has announced that Alfonso Lamadrid will be joining the firm’s Brussels office as a partner in the Antitrust & Competition Practice and a member of the Litigation & Trial Department. Widely recognised as a pioneer and one of the foremost figures in European competition law and related litigation, Lamadrid’s arrival reinforces the firm’s commitment to providing top-tier legal representation in complex and high-stakes matters.

Lamadrid brings extensive experience in strategic competition law counselling, with a strong focus on advising leading clients in the technology and digital sectors. His practice spans complex antitrust investigations, Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA) compliance, EU court litigation, merger control, and State aid enforcement across a wide range of industries.

He has represented companies in some of the most significant EU competition cases in recent years and was recently recognised as Global Litigator of the Year by Global Competition Review.

Joining from Garrigues, Lamadrid holds a Law degree from Universidad San Pablo CEU, an LL.M. from the College of Europe (Bruges), and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School. He is a member of both the Madrid Bar Association and the Brussels Bar (E-list).

In addition to his legal practice, Lamadrid is actively involved in academia. He teaches at the College of Europe, serves as a visiting professor at the Brussels School of Competition, and regularly lectures at various universities and institutions across Europe and beyond.

Leadership transition at Garrigues Brussels

Meanwhile, Mark English will take over leadership of the Brussels office at Garrigues, according to sources. English is a specialist in infringement procedures, merger control, litigation before the EU courts, and cross-jurisdictional damages claims.

He holds a Law degree from the University of Sheffield, an LL.M. in European Law from the College of Europe (Bruges), and pursued postgraduate studies at the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice.
