Stephenson Harwood opens in Madrid with J Almoguera Abogados team

Stephenson Harwood is expanding its international presence with the opening of a new office in Madrid, consolidating its European footprint and enhancing its ability to assist clients operating in Spain. The move is part of the firm’s broader strategy to strengthen services across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The Madrid office will initially focus on two key sectors: Private Capital and Funds, and Energy Transition & Infrastructure. It will provide legal advice across corporate, tax, real estate, finance, and dispute resolution matters, both domestic and cross-border.

Joining Stephenson Harwood in this new venture is the team from Spanish boutique firm J Almoguera Abogados (JAA). The team includes partners Jesús Almoguera, Carlos González, and Eduardo Vázquez. The firms share a long-standing relationship and a common approach to quality and client service. Almoguera highlighted the alignment between the two teams in areas such as complex litigation, arbitration, and special situations.

“We’re always looking for ways to support our clients grow and succeed in a complex world,” said Eifion Morris, Chief Executive Officer of Stephenson Harwood. “Our expansion into Madrid is an important step in our strategy to provide clients with access to top-tier legal expertise across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.”

“JAA and Stephenson Harwood have enjoyed a long-standing relationship, built on a mutual commitment to quality and client service,” said Jesús Almoguera, founding partner of JAA. “Our expertise in complex litigation, arbitration, and special situations aligns perfectly with Stephenson Harwood’s strengths in these areas, and we share a vision for building a successful practice in Madrid that combines deep local knowledge with international reach.” Eifion added: “This move is part of our growth strategy, to strengthen our expertise across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Unlike many peer firms, we’ve ruled out a merger with a US law firm. Our commitment is to offer our clients and our people an alternative to the transatlantic law firm model.”

The Madrid office is expected to open later in 2026.
