Nuria García Piñeiro, first woman to head the UCM School of Legal Practice

The School of Legal Practice at the Complutense University of Madrid (EPJ) has elected Nuria García Piñeiro as its new director. Professor García Piñeiro becomes the first woman to hold this position in the institution’s more than 70-year history.

García Piñeiro has a degree in Law from the University of Santiago de Compostela and a PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid. A disciple of Professor Montoya Melgar, she is a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Spain and a member of the 8th Section of Labour and Social Security Law. This appointment reinforces the University’s commitment to academic excellence and consolidates its presence in the field of postgraduate and specialised legal education.

The new director carries out her teaching and research activities at the Faculty of Law of the Complutense University of Madrid. She is the author of numerous studies on collective labour relations and collective bargaining, labour governance, training for employment, active employment policies, the special employment relationship of lawyers, the future of work and new technologies. She has also participated in multiple research projects on youth training and employment, productive decentralisation, occupational health and safety, women’s employment and the fight against gender discrimination, and on the challenges and opportunities of the impact of digitalisation on labour relations.

From 2012 to 2017, Professor García Piñeiro provided special services to the Ministry of Labour as an advisory member of the Minister’s Office. She was also a member of the International Labour Organisation’s Tripartite Commission on the Future of Work, the Board of Trustees of the State Foundation for Employment Training (FUNDAE) and the Board of Directors of the company Pequeños y Medianos Astilleros, Sociedad de Reconversión SA (PYMAR). At the Complutense University, she held the position of Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Law, and is currently a member of the University’s Governing Council and Social Council.
