Maria Athayde Tavares, new counsel at Linklaters

Linklaters in Lisbon has appointed Maria Athayde Tavares, head of the public law and regulatory practice, as counsel. Her work focuses on administrative contracts and public procurement, environmental law, and transactions in regulated sectors — particularly energy, healthcare, telecommunications, and transport. Tavares has extensive transactional experience, supporting M&A, project financing and structuring, and more recently, negotiating project contracts — an area experiencing strong growth due to technological innovation and the rise of new projects.

Commenting on the appointment, Marcos Sousa Monteiro, national managing partner, said: “Having realized early on that Maria brought something different to our team, it is with great pleasure that I witness this further recognition of the qualities and dynamism that define her. We count on her to continue adding ever more value to the projects she is involved in, helping our clients find the best path to achieve their goals in each transaction or project.”

For Maria Athayde Tavares, the appointment “is very exciting as recognition of a diverse professional journey and the work we are doing in this future-facing area. Our clients today face a time of great opportunity, volatility, and challenge — calling more and more for creativity and adaptability. I am thrilled to contribute daily to the development of tailored solutions for each client and need, while leading the sustainable growth of our public law and regulatory team.”

As of May 1, Linklaters’ Lisbon office now includes 10 partners and 4 counsels among its team of 50 lawyers and trainees. The election of 34 partners and 48 counsel worldwide was recently announced by Aedamar Comiskey, senior partner and chair of Linklaters.
