MFA Legal launches new tax criminal law service line

MFA Legal has announced the launch of a new service line dedicated to the prevention and management of tax-related criminal risks. This project, integrated into the firm’s core practice areas, will be led by Rui Costa Pereira (coordinating associate for criminal Law, regulatory offenses, and compliance) and Catarina Gomes Correia (senior associate for tax Law), both pictured.

According to Samuel Fernandes de Almeida, managing partner at MFA Legal: “From the outset, MFA Legal positioned itself as a boutique firm specializing in risk and crisis management, with a particular focus on tax and economic crime. Just over a year later, we believe it is the right time to establish a dedicated team for tax-related criminal matters, offering a 360º approach and providing our clients with a highly specialized and differentiated set of services.”

“Managing and preventing tax risk, defining socially responsible tax policies, navigating the complexity of international taxation, and ensuring compliance with ancillary obligations—as well as handling potential crises—are concerns that cut across all sectors and economic players, from SMEs to individual investors”, adds Almeida. “Tax criminal law requires strong technical expertise in both substantive and procedural tax law, as well as the specialized knowledge of a criminal lawyer”, he concludes.

This initiative has been designed to offer comprehensive and tailored preventive consulting solutions, including risk matrix identification, tax policy definition and audits, management and oversight of tax inspections, support throughout criminal investigations, and litigation response in crisis scenarios. According to the firm, the new tax criminal law team will be available in the markets where MFA operates, including Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), such as Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde.
