Boosting Young Lawyers’ role in the Legal Profession

The Spanish Bar Association is encouraging young lawyers to take a more active role in professional institutions from the start of their careers. This initiative was emphasized today during a meeting between Salvador González, President of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers (CGAE), and Alberto Cabello, President of the Spanish Confederation of Young Lawyers.

Both leaders agreed that the engagement of young legal professionals in the activities of bar associations will invigorate these institutions and foster a sense of belonging among new members. Early involvement, they believe, will help young lawyers feel more connected to their professional community.

The discussion also highlighted the need for changes to the current legal training and access to the profession. González emphasized the importance of reforming the bar exam and improving master’s programs in law to better prepare students for the practical demands of the legal profession.
“The master’s program must not only deepen knowledge but also equip future lawyers with the skills required in their day-to-day work. Likewise, the bar exam should move beyond being a simple knowledge test and instead contribute to preparing lawyers for their real-world responsibilities,” González stated.

Efforts to reform the bar exam have been ongoing between the General Council of Spanish Lawyers and the Ministry of Justice. However, progress was significantly delayed by the pandemic and the shift to online examinations.

Cabello, representing the perspective of young lawyers, reiterated the call for reducing the minimum membership requirements to join the duty roster (Turno de oficio). He also stressed the importance of maintaining two annual sittings for the bar exam, ensuring greater accessibility for aspiring legal professionals.

This collaboration between the General Council of Spanish Lawyers and the Confederation of Young Lawyers signals a shared commitment to fostering inclusivity, innovation, and practical readiness in Spain’s legal profession.
