Tomás Cobo Castro Elected as New President of Unión Profesional
Tomás Cobo Castro, President of the General Council of Spanish Medical Associations, has been elected the new President of Unión Profesional in an extraordinary assembly held yesterday in Madrid. Cobo secured 21 out of 36 votes, representing 58.8% of the vote from the presidents of national professional councils in fields such as law, economics, healthcare, science, education, architecture, and engineering.
This marks the first time a leader from the healthcare sector will head Unión Profesional, an organization that represents over 1.5 million professionals and 1,200 professional associations across Spain.
Cobo succeeds Victoria Ortega, the former President of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers, who stepped down in June, paving the way for internal elections. Salvador González, the newly elected President of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers, played a key role in supporting Cobo’s candidacy.
Upon his election, Cobo expressed his gratitude to González and reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the work of his predecessor, Ortega. “We will uphold the valuable legacy left by our former president, always in defense of the interests of the professional community,” he stated.
Cobo emphasized his intention to engage closely with the key sectors within the organization, vowing to foster collaboration across the diverse professions that comprise Unión Profesional. “I will meet with each of the leaders to understand their needs and establish a common agenda that strengthens our role in society,” he concluded.
Cobo’s opponents in the election included José Antonio Galdón, President of the General Council of Industrial Technical Engineering, and Fernando Jesús Santiago Ollero, President of the General Council of Administrative Managers.
