Vânia Costa Ramos is the new president of ECBA
Vânia Costa Ramos, a Portuguese criminal lawyer, member of the General Council, and founding partner of Carlos Pinto de Abreu e Associados, has been elected president of the European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA) for the 2024/2026 term. Costa Ramos, who was until recently the vice-president of the association, was unanimously elected in Helsinki, Finland, at the association’s most attended general assembly.

The ECBA is the most important association of criminal lawyers in Europe. It is recognized for its extensive and commendable work in promoting the quality of criminal justice, the prestige of criminal law practice, and, above all, the unwavering defense of individuals’ fundamental rights, the development of a democratic judicial culture, and the scrupulous respect for human rights.
In addition to the role she has just been elected to, Vânia Costa Ramos has previously served as president of the Forum Penal – Criminal Lawyers Association. She has also been a member of the Legal Experts Advisory Panel of Fair Trials International and a member of the Defence Extradition Lawyer’s Association. Since 2023, Vânia Costa Ramos has also been admitted to practice before the International Criminal Court. She is a Ph.D. candidate and holds a master’s degree in criminal law sciences from the Faculty of Law at the University of Lisbon.
