Ramón y Cajal advises on the purchase and loan of Caravaggio’s “Ecce Homo” to the Prado
Ramón y Cajal Abogados has been the main advisor in the purchase and loan to the Prado of the Ecce Homo by Caravaggio that appeared in Madrid.
The work, which reappeared at auction three years ago, was declared non-exportable by the Ministry of Culture and an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). It has been in the custody of the Colnaghi art gallery, in collaboration with Filippo Benappi (Benappi Fine Art) and Andrea Lullo (Lullo Pampoulides) and has been restored by the specialist Andrea Cipriani and his team under the supervision of experts from the Community of Madrid.
The new owner of the painting will lend it on temporary loan – for nine months – to the museum, which will initially exhibit it in a special individual installation from 28 May until October 2024.
Its team of experts in art law, led by the founding partner of the firm, Rafael Mateu de Ros, together with members of the tax, M&A and litigation teams, advised the Colnaghi gallery and the buyer on the acquisition of the painting and its temporary loan to the Museo Nacional del Prado for its exhibition.
