Joaquín Merchán, new president of the General Council of Social Graduates of Spain

The General Council of Social Graduates of Spain has elected Joaquín Merchán Bermejo, from Salamanca, as its new president. Last September he assumed the acting presidency of the institution as first vice-president, following the resignation of Ricardo Gabaldón.

Joaquín Merchán Bermejo

Joaquín Merchán was president of the Official College of Social Graduates of Salamanca between 2003 and 2015, second vice-president of the General Council itself between 2014 and 2018 and, subsequently, first vice-president.

The figure of president of the General Council represents the interests of the social graduates of Spain and is in constant communication also with the Colleges and the autonomous Councils. He is also the communication link between this profession and the public administrations.

For the new president, the objective of this mandate is “to strengthen the role of social graduates as key professionals in the field of social justice, reinforcing the vocation of service to citizens. In this sense, the participation of our collective in the administration of free justice, our participation in the appeal in cassation before the Supreme Court, encouraging the framework of collaboration between public administrations and social graduates to be fairer and alleviating the unsustainable pressure to which professionals are subjected with the Social Security Treasury, will be part of our agenda as General Council”.

Merchán emphasizes as another of his priorities and that of the members of the General Council the development of the Strategic Plan of the General Council of Colleges of Social Graduates, recently approved, to enhance the visibility of these experts in labor law and Social Security, among other objectives.

Until 2026

Last Friday’s election puts an end to the exceptional situation in the General Council due to the resignation of the previous president. Now, Joaquín Merchán will hold the presidency until 2026 to close the mandate started in 2022.
