ICAM launches a deontological guide for public defence lawyers

On the occasion of International Lawyer’s Day, the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM) has reaffirmed its support for pro bono lawyers, emphasizing their crucial role in upholding the right to defense for the most vulnerable citizens. During an event held at the ICAM headquarters and attended by lawyers involved in pro bono services, the association dedicated the day to recognizing and reinforcing the efforts of these frontline legal professionals.

The ICAM presented a document outlining ten essential rights that it deems crucial for the practice of pro bono law. The highlighted precepts include dignity and respect, freedom, independence, fair and non-discriminatory treatment, decent compensation and pensions, free and quality training, and defense against interference. The association aims to improve conditions and strengthen guarantees for the thousands of professionals providing an essential yet often underappreciated service.

The ICAM’s pro bono service comprises 5,030 registered professionals, with 52% being male and 48% female. The majority, 59%, are experienced lawyers aged over 50. In terms of legal areas, criminal law constitutes 47% of registrations, civil law 32%, administrative law 14%, and labor law 7%.
