The most active law firms in private equity in Iberia

Garrigues and Cuatrecasas are the most active in the Spanish private equity market by number of transactions, while CCA Law Firm and Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados, lead the ranking of the most active in the Portuguese private equity market by number of transactions, according to the report ‘Five Years of Private Equity -Spain & Portugal’, conducted by TTR Data, in partnership with iDeals.

The second edition of ‘Five Years of Private Equity -Spain & Portugal’, carried out by TTR Data and in alliance with iDeals, makes visible the work of legal and financial firms in large private equity transactions in the Iberian market, through the publication of the ranking and data of the private equity market from 2019 to 2023.

Private Equity Spain

According to the report, the Private Equity market in Spain remained relatively stable in the last few years before the pandemic. Subsequently, there was significant growth recorded between 2021 and 2022 and, as of 1Q23, a correction of this significant increase in the number of transactions was generated, with a decrease of almost 47% in its activity compared to the same period in 2022. A large part of these transactions between 2019 and 2023 in Spain come from domestic investments, whereas before the pandemic they came from cross-border investments.

Private Equity Portugal

For its part, the Private Equity market in Portugal increased the volume of transactions and aggregate value between 2021 and 2022, to the highest levels in the last 10 years. However, in 2023 it remained relatively stable and, in 1Q23, there was a correction of this significant increase in the number of transactions, with a decrease of almost 35% in its activity compared to the same period in 2022. A large part of these transactions between 2019 and 2023 in Portugal come from domestic investments, whereas before the pandemic they came from cross-border investments.

Spanish Ranking

According to TTR Data’s legal ranking in the Private Equity market in Spain is led in 2023 by Garrigues Spain and Cuatrecasas Spain, with 44 deals each, by volume of transactions. By value, it is led by Uría Menéndez Spain, with an aggregate value of 10.5 billion euros; and Linklaters Spain, with 7.4 billion euros.

Portuguese Ranking

In Portugal, Private Equity legal advice is led in 2023, based on transaction volume, by CCA Law Firm, with 25 transactions, followed by Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Asociados, with 14 deals. By value, Uría Menéndez – Proença de Carvalho leads the legal ranking, with a total value of 112 million euros, followed by Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados, with 108 million euros.
