Cuatrecasas integrates GBP Legal, adds new partner

Cuatrecasas has announced the incorporation of ex-Uría Menéndez José Ramón Berecibar as a partner and the integration of GBL Legal

In the next few days, the Board of Partners will take a decision on the incorporation of José Ramón Berecibar (pictured left) to coordinate the Commercial practice in the Basque Country. The signing of Berecibar includes the integration of the law firm GBP Legal, of which Berecibar is managing partner. The current offices in Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria join forces to operate as a single office.

Berecibar, who specialises in Corporate, Commercial and Capital Markets, is one of the most active lawyers in the Basque Country. He was founding partner of GBP Legal, and he previously spent more than 11 years developing his professional career in Uría Menéndez and Slaughter & May in London. José Ramón Berecibar also currently advises various Boards of Directors of some of the most important listed companies in the Basque Country (CIE Automotive, Vidrala, Global Dominion Access) as secretary.

The incorporation of Berecibar would also involve the integration of the law firm GBP Legal, a boutique law firm based in Bilbao that focuses on providing advice on Commercial, M&A, Corporate Restructuring, Finance and Capital Markets. It currently advises some of the best corporations in the Basque Country on Commercial matters, including various listed and unlisted companies, financial institutions and public institutions.

In anticipation of the possible new incorporations, the firm has launched a reorganisation of the internal structure. Cuatrecasas has created a unique office in the Basque Country to further improve the service it provides to its clients. As of January 1st, the firm’s current offices in Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria will be unified to operate as a single office. The reorganisation -which will make it the firm’s third office in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona- will enable the team structure of the three offices to be unified around practice areas and at the same time keep the three current physical headquarters open in the three historic territories. The single office will have a total of 60 lawyers by 2021.

The new head of the single office in the Basque Country will be the current managing partner of the San Sebastian office and coordinator of all Cuatrecasas’ territorial offices, Joanes Labayen (pictured right).

In 2021, Cuatrecasas will celebrate 82 years of uninterrupted activity in the Basque Country.
