Bird & Bird makes leading energy hire

Hermenegildo Altozano, one of Spain’s leading energy lawyers, is to join the Madrid office of Bird & Bird.
Altozano joins from Hogan Lovells where he had been Head of the Energy and Natural Resources practice in Madrid. He will take on a similar role at his new firm. Joining with him is his team comprising public law Counsel Coral Yáñez and Senior Associates Alfonso Bayona and Esther Sebastián.

The moves mark a major step forward in the energy sector for Bird & Bird in Spain, which it sees as a growth area in light of an increasingly complex European regulatory environment, a Governmental push to better manage Spain’s energy deficit, and significant changes in the country’s renewable energy tariffs.

Altozano previously practised with Eversheds Lupicinio before joining Lovells in 2007, and before that Texas-based Bracewell & Patterson (now Bracewell & Giuliani). A significant area of his practice focus is towards Cuba, where he has advised on energy and infrastructure projects and investment – an area of conflict with the US practices of Hogan Lovells.
